Myspace Guerilla Marketing

I wanted to pass along to you some tips I got recently from “The Internet Genius”, Ben Cope.

Ben and I had a nice long talk about marketing strategies and when he mentioned Myspace, a light bulb went off in my head. He then explained some great ways to market your site to an audience of more than 80 million people. I can’t think of a better place to get your site seen.

-Guerilla Marketing-

  • Get Friends - Most of you have over 100 people on your Myspace page now. That’s a great start, but how about introducing yourself to friends of friends? You want to meet as many new contacts as possible. You want friends, and you want them now! Be sure to target your friend requests though. You want people that are like-minded and that you may actually get to visit your blog. Don’t be tempted to use a Myspace friend adder either? These automatic adders are a sure way to get your account closed.
  • Make A Button - Make a button for your Myspace ad campaign and link it to your blog. Making a button isn’t all that hard. I’m a complete photoshop noob and I managed to make a somewhat appealing button. I recommend not to make your button any larger than 200×200 pixels. Any larger than this and you risk getting it deleted because it looks like comment spam. If you are having trouble creating a button email me at admin@onemansgoal.com and I’ll do what I can to help you. Once you have it created just store it in a free image host like Photobucket. My button is featured below. This one links to my Myspace page. You can join my friends list by clicking it and going to “add to friends”.
    1. Change “My Blogs URL” to your site address; ex. “http://onemansgoal.com”
    2. Change “URL Where The Image Is Located” to the the address the image is being stored at. If you use Photobucket you can copy the html code directly off of their site and all you have to change is #1 and #3
    3. Change “My Blogs Text” to what you want it to say when people scroll over. It can be anything!
    • Comment - What I want you to do is… every time you get someone that accepts a friend request or adds you to their friends COMMENT! Send them a comment thanking them for adding you and personalize it by saying something that relates to them, their page, or anything else that comes to mind
    • Use Your Button - You’ll be commenting anyway, why not use that sweet new button you made? Use it for bulletin posts, blog entries, comments, and everything in between. It’s your free piece of the Myspace advertising pie! You can use this piece of code to insert your button into comments. Just copy, paste, and make the changes I have listed below!
  • OneMansGoal.Com

    <a href=”http://MY BLOGS URL” target=”_blank”><img src=”http://URL WHERE THE IMAGE IS LOCATED” alt=”MY BLOGS TEXT”></a>

    One more thing!!!
Some users have opted not to display html in their comments. This means that the code I gave you will not work here. You can see if they don’t allow html because right above the comment box (in red) will be some text telling you. No text? Fair game. If they do have the text though, you should still comment when they add you or vice-versa. Instead of including your button, include the URL to your blog.

Well readers, that’s it. It’s pretty simple and I’m somewhat surprised I didn’t think of it without the help of “The Internet Genius”. They say the true mark of a genius is to remember the simple things that most overlook. It held true here. Thanks Ben!

I’ll jump in with another tip: Know what your Goal is for using myspace, and then use it within that context. In this case, it is probably to drive myspace traffic to your blog and to network with other DotComPreneurs. It can become a time stealer if you’re not conscious of why you’re there.

      Live Your Dreams,

      -Jill :)

Here’s a word of warning about MySpace for all the OneMansGoal readers … be careful if you ever think about using an automatic friend adder on MySpace (like AddNewFriends.com ). MySpace is beginning to crack down on people using these tools, and your account (and all of your thousands of new friends) could be completely deleted if you get caught. One other word of warning: there are some “free” online tools you can use to add new friends to your MySpace account, but you should know that entering your MySpace account login and password on any site that is not the official MySpace site could open your account up to be hacked.

I created a Myspace page (a 4th one) for the purpose of driving traffic to my blog. In a little over two weeks I’ve managed to accumulate over 1600 “friends” using Myspace trains. I get a decent amount of traffic from Myspace but according to Google Analytics they hit the page for a few seconds and are gone. The traffic I get from other sources seems to stick around a bit more and actually go beyond the page I brought them to.

Ok that post formatted weird. I got the traffic using Myspace Trains… The rest should be self explanatory

Is myspace really worth it though? I guess it kinda depends on your content. Never was into the myspace phenomenon. But hopefully it works for others out there.

I never really thought MySpace readers can be into blogs. I signed up for a MySpace account made especially about my blog, but I haven’t really update it or used it. Gonna have to do it soon.

Jill and Ben are exactly right. The traffic has to be targeted towards your blog.

My apologies for leaving this out. My brain shuts down right around the time I was posting this.

Excellent post Bryan. I’ve actually put this off for quite some time, and I really need to capitalize on the marketing power of Myspace. Of course I have a personal page with a link to my blog, but dedicating an entire page to it is not a bad idea at all.

If I can just find the time to do it, I’m definitely going for it.

I’m a little timid about marketing with MySpace. You might work on a page for a few months, then get banned for “spam.”

    11. By B. Durant on Jul 23, 2007 | Reply

Jason - There is a distinct difference between marketing and spamming. You should always try to pre-qualify your audience before marketing to them. With something like Myspace take advantage of the ability to send a message. Introduce yourself, tell them about your blog, get a little personal with them but do all that AT THE SAME TIME you send the friend request. You’ll probably get less friends (unless you’re peddling porn) but the potential for them to take action is much greater.

That’s simple marketing 101, and if you lay all the information on the table chances are very slim anyone will complain about spam. Unless of course you are just obnoxious. I tend to post a link to each new article in two of my Myspace blogs and in one blog I will post four or five bulletins a day to my site. In the other I only post the links in the blog as they are personal friends.

Interesting concept. I’ve never spent much time at MySpace trying to gain traffic for another site. In fact, I’ve never really spent much time at MySpace at all.

I’m not suggesting you can’t get traffic that way, but I would think there are better places to spend your time and effort. I’m not for a moment saying you can’t get traffic that way. The question is how effective that traffic will be on your site???

    13. By B. Durant on Jul 23, 2007 | Reply

A.J. - Not effective at all if you don’t take the time to target the proper people before marketing to them from my experience

This is a nice idea! Especially if you really reach out and get to know your friends on myspace. I think you can also do this kind of thing at other sites such as multiply or friendster… just my two cents. :)

Oh my God, I hate Myspace. I signed on for the first time in a long time tonight. It only crashed my browser a few times.

    17. By Bryan on Jul 24, 2007 | Reply

Aj - I couldn’t disagree with you more about having better places to spend your time when you are trying to generate traffic. Where else can you reach 80 million visitors at any given time. I’m sure a few of them would be interested in my site. You just have to target your friend requests!

      Durant - CORRECT!

Angela - Myspace isn’t something I completely endorse. I hate flashing, glittery smileys telling me hello when I visit someones page. But… It is a GREAT way to get traffic!

    18. By Jason on Jul 24, 2007 | Reply

Thanks for your insight, Durant. Come to think of it, I have a friend who subtly does something like that, and he’s been on MySpace for over a year.

I really, really hate myspace and wish it would just totally disappear all together

Thanks for the tip! I’ll try this out later. :)

i find it more useful if you can find a common group that you share an interest with and comment and add them to your friends list.

    22. By kevin on Jul 27, 2007 | Reply

Don’t use trains or friend sites, they are worthless.

You can target market on myspace so easily, reading some of the comments on here by people that allegedly know about the site and how to maximize the use of it is funny.
