How To Make Money Online
By Marc on Aug 12, 2008 in Featured
Let me start off by saying that there are a lot of different ways to make money online. I prefer to get into projects that continue to make money, even after the work is done. When I started learning how to make money online I was looking for passive income, what I have come to find is that nothing is really passive in this business. However, by developing sites that don’t require a lot of time to run you can leverage your time across many different websites. I’ve chosen to work 3 different angles within my business model.
Blogging - Of the three business models I use is blogging. Blogging is the most time intensive, however the fringe benefits are high. When you are starting out, you’re going to have a lot of questions, with a blog you begin to accumulate friends and they will help you out when you are stuck on something. It is truly amazing when you find yourself stuck on a problem with your website and you put a post up and you get an answer you were looking for. With your blog you can make money selling advertising space, affiliate products, and sponsored reviews.
Content Sites/Niche Blogs - it is important to not put all of your make money eggs in one basket. With that said, google adsense is the most appealing business model I have found. To give you an example I own a site about cheap airsoft guns, last month it pulled in 40 dollars and I’ll I did to get that money was to build additional links.
E-commerce - I’m going to start off this section with a disclaimer, I currently don’t run any ecommerce sites. The reason why, is that my current motivation is to make enough money so I can travel and play and not have to work all the time. For me to not have to work all the time and be able to travel I need to make around $2,000/month. 2K a month should be doable between the blog and the content sites if I put in a solid year of work. However, in the future I think I’d like to have a family and when that happens I want to be making more than this. So, for right now I’ve picked 8 niches and registered domains. I’ve been slowly sending links to the domains so when I do develop them out I will already have some keyword authority for my main keyword making it easier to rank for the long tail keywords. Long term, I think e-commerce sites are the way to make money on line.

Hey Marc, good to hear from this site again. Definitely some ideas to make money online, but is this anything new or innovative? Good information for beginners (which is what you’re aiming for, I think), not that I’m an expert myself. Hope things pan out, I was worried there for a while when you weren’t posting. Keep it up, the $$ should roll in at some point.

Nice post. Making money online doesn’t happen over night — it’s definitely a long term engagement. The more you put in — the more you get out in my opinion!

Marc,
did you know that if you link to your home page with ‘make money online’ somewhere in your post that it does some good seo wise? Look at Courts “keyword sniper” theme and you’ll see that one of the things he did with that template was add a link to the homepage in the footer…with an anchor of course.
Check out his keyword sniper article if you haven’t already…it’s really good. Talks a bit about smart internal linking and what it can do for your site.

Great post! I’m just starting out and will be signing up for your ebook. I think I may be in Google’s sandbox. I get a trickle of search engine traffic but not much. How do you know if you’ve been sandboxed?
By Marc on Aug 14, 2008 | Reply
@Transformers - I’m not sure the answer to that. My advice would be to not worry about it and keep putting out content and building links (social bookmarking, article marketing and blog commenting. Best of luck

I would have to say that even though the idea of making money online is great, 99% of the people reading this wont commit to actually doing what it takes to really make money online. Sad but true.

I totally agree with you not to put all of your make money eggs in one basket. You really have to widen your business scope to survive and and make a good living on passive income nowadays.

@Xyberk - multiple streams of semi-passive income is what its all about

Please everyone who wants to make money online. Please don’t take the “easy road” and claim fictitious earnings, or worse, sell websites at auction and place ’shill’ bids.
There are many suckers out there, and unfortunately, some of them will take you at your word as to the ‘value’.
Take the road less travelled - at least you’ll have your honor, even if you’re broke.

Hi Marc,
Will having some keyword presence really help with your long tail keyword terms? I didn’t realize that you were ‘ranked’ for long term keywords.
Would you have any resources that I could read up on long tail keywords?
By Marc on Sep 8, 2008 | Reply
@Xanydude - The best resource I can give you is
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal/
You can read all you want about the long tail but until you use this tool it wont make since. Here is what you do go to the link above and type in Make Money. Then when the results come up double click the Approx Avg Search Volume and it will list the entire long tail from most searched to least searched. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you will find take money to make money at 210 searches a month.
This term would probably be easy to rank for with ten to twenty anchored links.
Yes you do rank for the long tail keywords, since I’ve been targeting the long tail 5 of my top ten traffic bring keywords have been long tail keywords. Best of luck

@Tracy,
You see Tracy, what seems outdated to you does not seem that way to others, particularly those who are new and want to learn how to make money online.
Everyone has to start somewhere.
Marc isn’t trying to set himself up an ‘an authority’ here - he is being honest. He is working through a plan of how to make money from the internet and sharing it with us - the successes and the failures.
I guess one day soon he will be able to show us ‘the very latest money making techniques’ (which as most of us know are usually variations on an old theme anyway), but for now he is working alongside other beginners in the MMO field. So his content fits the purpose it was intended for.

@Tracy - I’m still learning, but I’ll share what I learn along the way
@Zania - well said.

There are SO many ways to make money online. I’m in Forex myself. My advice is: Be creative and do NOT give up if you don’t see instant results. Some people get to caught up in this instant gratification thing that they forget their real goal. Stay with it, tweak it, research it, and then DO IT!

Ryan - I like your motivation. I have several CPC (Adsense) sites up and running and I have to say they are the simplest way to earn cash, however I am finding that they are also very time intensive. This is because I have to develop so many of them so that they can make a profit that is worth writing home about.
So I am trying to KISS it by creating more and more sites, becaus I have yet to find a single site that will do over 8-10 USD per day. And to be honest the money tapers off radically towards the end of the month as marketing budgets dry up.
Keep up the work it can be done. I am going to keep on keeping on with ya brother. - James

Your article is brilliant, it’s been optimised for your keywords without stuffing the article with keywords, this would reduce the amount of credability Google gives to it.
Well done!

There are too many blogs and the same things these days though. People need to follow one specific niche, otherwise it is almost impossible to get traffic.

I feel that Flipping is the best way to go about, if you want to start off.
I think it is safer than any other method. There is so much freedom and also you can take your time when you are flipping. So it is something that I would say is a safe bet.
