How Do You Add Metatags To Your Header
By Marc on Jul 19, 2008 in Better Blogging
I’m making this post because in the comment section of my post about Griz, he commented and asked me if I had contacted Google about my pagerank slap. The answer is no, if you have been following for awhile Justin told me to do the same thing. (check out Justin’s SEO blog)
When I followed the link Justin gave me to the Google webmaster thing it said I had to create an HTML file in the index (witch I also don’t know how to do) or insert a metatag on the blog to verify ownership.
In the comments zania was nice enough to tell me how to get started, however that is where I’m getting lost. Please watch the video and let me know if you have any ideas.

Hi again Marc,
I couldn’t see the video very well (it was quite blurry), so I’m guessing here:
You should be on the Header (header.php) page.
I guess you are on the right one as the ‘logo’ file doesn’t sound correct.
As long as you paste that meta tag above the end of the head you should be fine.
This is where I place my meta tags (and Google picks them up just fine):
Then ‘update file’.
Go into the Google Webmaster page and check if the meta tag is fund by Google. If it is, Google will tell you so. If it isn’t, no harm done, you just need to place it somewhere else…
But this should work

Darn!
The comments section wouldn’t take the code I pasted in. I’ll try it this way:
Place the meta tag just above the (which, if this doesn’t show up in this comment is left arrow, slash, head, right arrow)

Still didn’t come out right!
place the meta tag above the php head code with a ?
(this is just above the ending of the head file as shown above)
Hope that makes sense!

Not sure becaue I can’t see clearly on the Vid but it looks loke your theme uses to header.php templates…..thats fine
If that is the case you’ll need to add the meta tag to both files.
Paste the meta tag above then confirm in webmaster tools

Cant post any code in the comments
but you have to paste it before the
/head

Sorry will type my dirst comment again….it made no sense
Not sure because I can’t see clearly on the Vid but it looks like your theme uses two header.php files…
If that is the case you’ll need to add the meta tag to both files before the
/head
and then verify in webmaster tools

I’ve just seen Grizzly’s post in your last entry (about him).
Perhaps it would be best to go for the option he suggests. Could be easier considering the two header files and the fact none of us can paste the right code here for you.
(I’m not spamming your comments honest! Only trying to help)

Marc,
I’ve posted a step by step demonstration with screenshots here;

(you’ll have to add the http bit back on the link)
Hope this clears it up.

Quick tip Marc. People generally hate anything that plays automatically. You might annoy some by going with the auto-play option on your videos.
By Ian on Jul 20, 2008 | Reply
Yes, that is pretty annoying. Especially if you have subscibed to comments, each time you come back it starts playing again…shut up already
By zania on Jul 20, 2008 | Reply
Agree with Bryan and Ian.
As I was adding my comment about meta tags you kept playing over and over again.
Got just a little annoying….

Thank you so much for all of the help, I followed Grizz tutorial and it is now done and I’m verified. This stuff is easy to do,,,,once you know it. Damn, its really confusing first time around.
@Ian - thank you for you input as well. I appreicate you being here and commenting, even without a link.
@Grizzly - That tutorial was awesome, really walked me right through it. When I got to the part about uploading to the top level directory, I didn’t know what/where that was so I had to call hostgator. But I’m done. Thank you so much for the suggestion to request reconsideration, I’ve been putting it off of to long
By Grizzly on Jul 20, 2008 | Reply
Marc,
One last thing before requesting reconsideration. Create two sidebar sections. Keep the “Sweet Links” section and only put the paid links in it (The no-follow). The second section “I Recommend” should have only non-paid blogroll links in it (do-follow). You don’t want the do-follow and no-follow links in the same section or it will look like you are passing PR with paid links regarding the do-followed links. I know they aren’t paid but Google may not see it this way. Btw - thanks for the link!

Even without a link? I don’t see what that has to do with anything. Why would liking to one of my sites on Roofing, Bankruptcy, Parenting, Weight Loss, Soccer Coaching, Buzz Lightyear, Debt Consolidation, Car Finance, Wireless Speakers or any of my other niches add anything to the conversation.
Why would any of your readers be interested in clicking my name and being taken to a site in any of these niches? Why would I want to whoare traffic away from a site such as yours to any of my niche sites? Why would myself or my advertisers be interested in such poorly targeted traffic?
Exactly? It would be pretty pointless…
I don’t know why having my name link to a site should change the way any comment I make is interpretted or affect the value of my comment in anyway.
Maybe if I ever start a “Make Money” blog I’ll include a link. Until then…

I’m showing up late =P
It all work out for you ok? Did you send the request to Google?
Thanks for the link too by the way =)
I have a history in web design, so I forget that a lot of people are comfortable digging around code. Its a great skill to have though. Its not too hard, you just have to get your hands dirty and just do it a few times.
Your sidebar appears messed up to me. Is this just me or is it doing it for anyone else? The right side bar appears lower than the left one.
By Marc on Jul 21, 2008 | Reply
@Ian - I’m not sure how you took my comment, but it was meant to be a complement. Anyway, thanks for stopping by.
@Justin - Yep request send to google, and I didn’t write to them about how the do-follows are not paid. Hope this helps as I requested reconsideration before reading Grizzlys new comment. Sidebar looks fine to me, anyone else having Justin’s problem??

Sidebars look okay to me in both Firefox and IE7, but I use a 28 inch monitor - it may look different on others!
About the links:
Did you save the widget itself, before clicking ’save changes’? Otherwise the first ’save’ (the widget itself) won’t be accepted.
Other than that, I don’t know, sorry. You need advice from someone who knows more about the intricacies of wordpress. Hopefully they’ll be along soon
I did look at the source though, but couldn’t see anything wrong there - not with the coding anyway.

@ Marc: Looks good in all current browsers. Scanned it’s and looking good.

Marc: Did you get the darn verification file handled yet? I can’t tell from the comments. Let me know if oyu need something… sorry I’m a few days behind schedule!
By Marc on Jul 22, 2008 | Reply
@PB - Yep, everything is squared away. I just hope Google doesn’t come back and want me to make any changes. If they do I would be happy to make them. I want them to be happy with my site so I can rank higher, I don’t mind playing by the rules. If you cheat or take a short cut it always catches up with you.
By zania on Jul 22, 2008 | Reply
Yay! I’m glad that worked.
I was hoping it would be something easy to put right, rather than mess about with the code.
Wordpress can be a real pain sometimes. The ’save the widget first’ thing has been more of an issue since 2.5. Loads of people have had the same problem as you, that’s why I thought it was that.
Looking Good!

@ Marc: Glad you got it all squared away. I love organic blogging so you’re on the right track. Black hat is old hat and those folks *cough* Vic *cough* that use them, will be “G-Slapped” sooner than later.
People in general are getting tires of manipulated results, and molested listings… after all what’s the purpose? To trick people into reading your materials… backdoor sell something… it’s unreal.
Anyway, glad you’re taking the “Work Hard” approach. Just remember…
“Work hard now. Play longer later”
@ Zania: Fancy seeing you here.

Excellent… there are a number of meta tag generators as well. Do a search for meta tag generator and this will help making sure the code is right.

@PB - For sure - I’m planning on being in the game for a long time, I want to get off and a good foot with google.
@PJ - Thanks man, I’ll be sure to check it out.
@Lipsense - HTML definiatly seems the way to go.

PR is currently updating. I checked your site in a few multiple DC checkers. Some are showing your PR as 0. They seem to show up as either 2 or 0.
This may indicate that your PR will be going down with this update.
Anyone getting this?
Don’t stress it until you get your DC update, but thought I’d give you a heads up.
By zania on Jul 25, 2008 | Reply
Shoot!
I’ve just checked OMG out too.
Seems like it is 0…
By Justin Briggs on Jul 26, 2008 | Reply
Yeah, you officially changed for my DC to PR 0.
They may have thought you were still selling links since you just recently sent in the request.
Does webmaster tools tell you there are any problems?
