Make Money Blogging — Predicting the Future by Examing Current Trends
By Marc on Jul 25, 2008 in Better Blogging
Blogging is an easy way to get your content up on the web. This means that anyone can now publish content, build an audience and cash in. You can make money blogging either by selling ad space, affiliate marketing, or even offering your own products or services.
Even a relatively inexperienced blogger can start making money by offering reviews and participating in a network that matches advertisers and bloggers.
However, it is necessary to pay attention to what’s coming in the future and adjust your strategy accordingly if you want to build a sustainable business from blogging.
Here are a few trends that are slowly changing the industry. None are revolutionary, but if you don’t pay attention to them, you will be behind the ball when they occur. Also, as a side not if you would like to learn more about blogging check out this business blogging guide
1. Quality Content Becomes Compulsory
No business can ever reach all their prospective customers alone. That’s why affiliate model becomes very effective because they only pay their affiliates for every sale driven their way.
As the time goes, affiliate merchants will soon become more picky about where they want their products to appear. They don’t want to be related to low quality web sites with nothing but junk content, such as with splogs.
If you tune into the news, you should notice that Google now has an affiliate network. They also purchased YouTube — which is a huge video content site — in 2006. With control over the largest video sites online, they will be able to control product exposure to a certain extent.
This trend will only increase in the future.
2. Blog Network is Going Up
Content networks will be a strong online property. Owners of blog networks filter for blogs with superb quality content before they include the blogs as part of their network. They may even speed up the process of growing their properties by buying blogs.
Aggregated traffic from multiple blogs in a blog network is significant enough to give them power to negotiate deals with big advertisers directly. That’s where the majority of the money will go.
Independent blogs may still make money by selling ad space, but they won’t be able to get big advertisers to buy.
3. Authority Sites in Niches
The more specific your content, the better the readers are able to resonate to what you have to say. Authority sites will become more important in the future but the coverage becomes more focused on niche markets.
With tightly related content, joining a blog network becomes easier because of the unique content. It also has a higher value per visitor so advertisers would come back repeatedly to pay for ads on your blog.
Focusing on very specific niche markets will be very lucrative. Affiliate networks and advertisers would want to partner with such sites because of the quality (and responsiveness) of the visitors.
Review
The future is bright for bloggers who are building value with content.
If you are making money today, that doesn’t mean it will last, unless you take necessary steps to adjust your strategy accordingly.
At the end of the day, business is still business. You have to work on it to take it off the ground. It can be very rewarding though if you are passionate about the topic you are blogging. There are only a few things that are better than working from the comfort for your own home, get involved in the topic you are interested in, and still make a living with it.

Bloggers who want to build a blog that lasts should start building their most valuable asset from now — content. That’s how you will build audience and keep them come back for more in the future.

Not quite sure what you are saying Jimmy… PR updated and Marc dropped last time to a 2 or 3 if I remember, and now it went all the way down to a zero… It’s just very strange and odd for something like that to keep happening when he has nofollow on all his links.

I definitely feel that it is a race to get to a somewhat ‘higher quality’ space for blogs before a lot of the above to happen. I give it another year or so…
