Viral Link And How It Helps You
By Bryan Clark on Jul 19, 2007 in Uncategorized
I noticed a new incoming link this morning coming from Terence Chang’s blog. After going to check it out, I noticed that Terence was kind enough to add my blog to a viral link list.
What is Viral Link?
Viral Link, or Viral Linking was a concept created for bloggers to add incoming links to their site, by sharing others. Let me explain. I always preach that you should show love to the community and to other bloggers… this is one way to do that.
By placing a link on top of the list, you are creating a Viral Link list that you hope will be spread around the internet (much like a virus). However, this virus is awesome!
So the goal is, you add a friends blog to the list… Well, Terence added me, so I choose to add him, and my friend Ryan from Ryan Shamus Dot Com.
We place our names on top of this list, and ask everyone that reads to do the same at their blogs. Place your link, or the link of a friends blog at the top of the list, and then post about it asking people to do the same. The more this list spreads around, the more incoming links everyone on it will receive!!!
It really is a sweet idea, and a great way to show some blog love to your friends in the community.
I’ll post the list here, and I hope that you will all consider doing the same at your blogs! Don’t remove any names, and don’t add more than 5… Keep the list circulating!
Here are the rules -
1. Write something explaining how viral link lists or viral linking works. Make sure you aren’t just copy and pasting what I wrote, as it will show up as duplicate content and hurt you when it comes PR update time.
2. Add your link to the top of the post… or the links of a friend or two. Write some catchy anchor text (”Whatever” instead of “www.whatever.com”)
3. Place your contributions into the list.
4. Try to make sure that the blog you add is using the “Do Follow” plugin so that we can reward those that are part of this movement. Write a little something about viral link lists or viral linking and you are good to go!
That’s it!

What if people don’t use the code to continue on?

I always wanted to try this Viral Linking thing but just never had the time to look it with more detail :/

contamination - Well nobody is forcing anyone to use the code. It’s just a way to give back to the community while possibly gaining a reader or two and getting a few sweet backlinks…
ben - It’s an awesome way to get backlinks and find a few new blogs to read. Community support is <3

Interesting concept. Not sure I’d want to post such a large/long list of links though. Perhaps it should be limited to 10 total links or something like that.

Interesting idea…that’s one I haven’t heard of. Is that bleeding out a lot of PR though?

Thanks for the comments folks!
Utah - It helps you more than it hurts. The incoming links are far more valuable than the outgoing ones. Plus it allows you to show some love to the community! You can’t get what you want without giving too!

Hey, I subbed you and fav’d you, and if I could find a faster way to copy and paste without doing it by hand, I’d participate in this viral linking as well. If you know how, please share!
By Bryan on Jul 19, 2007 | Reply
Kuanyin - if you can’t make the list appear as active links without doing them individually, I would recommend just adding your blog, and a couple of your blog friends and creating your own mini-list!

Greetings -
This seems like a really good idea. One question, does google pick up on this sort of thing? Do the sites have to be in your niche? If no, I will probably add you to my site http://www.mytropicalescape.com because you have a lot of great SEO information here.
Best,
Mark

If you’re into the viral linking thing you may also be interested in my experimental “Eclectolink“.
It’s starting to make some decent progress.

Bryan, will google consider this a link farm? I’ve had so many tags on viral links that I am concerned if it’ll actually be beneficial. Your thoughts?
By Bryan on Jul 22, 2007 | Reply
dorischua - You would need WAAAAY more links to be considered a link farm. Google uses a formula that calculates your sites ACTUAL TEXT and NUMBER OF OUTGOING LINKS and arrives at an answer. It also helps to have a lot of your links, linking to internal pages. Like relevant posts or recent posts… something like that
Keep posting content and the outgoing links won’t hurt much. I think link love is way more beneficial than hurtful.

I just read the previous comment. I’m worried about the appearance of a link farm as well.

the only problem with me is that i hate this kind of scheme.
maybe i need to change my attitude for me to earn tons of backlinks

Great idea tho skeptical if it will book any results?
Probably now all on the list see my blog as linking to them, but whats the next step, should these blogs be Blogrolled and viceversa or something?

Well, they should be posted in an article which could be sticky for a week or two, on top of all your articles, I say.
So, if you have 2 or 3 articles a day or 2 days, this first article will always be there (not more than 2 weeks, though), and you could show the first 5 or 10 links in the article summary, and the rest of them when the reader clicks on [Read more...].
I think this might be the best idea.

I have made the first step, now it’s your turn, you blogroll me and I’ll brogroll you (and everybody else from the list who did same) and job done. But after your answer I do not believe you would do it, so I’ll delete the “Viral Link” post from my blog tomorrow.

hello, this is one great viral linking example. Will it work if i’m not blogrolled by you?
i used the code , can you blogroll me?
