Creating An Adsense Account And Applying The New Code To Your New Theme
By Marc on May 22, 2008 in Video Posts
Slight change in plans for this series, I’ve been working with relaxationtipsvideos.com to document the how to create a vlog series. However, this isn’t helping me achieve my goals of making money online. Using wordpress to create sites can be applied to more than just blogs. Lately I’ve been talking about creating content sites to make money online, so I’m going to be developing a new content site in this series. Understand this can be applied to anything, content site of vlog. Recently on SitePoint there was a site for sale called http://ww.dust-mites.org It was earning 200 dollars/month and was ranked 9th for the search term dust mists. The new owner has managed to get it to rank 8th currently but I’ve seen it all the way up to 5th. So, I know there is money to be made in this niche.
Yesterday, I registered the domain name http://dustmiteknowledge.com. So far I’ve added the domain to my hostgator account, installed wordpress, applied the prosense theme and today I’m going to change the adsense code.
My goal is to get this site ranking in google for dust mites as well as the top 10 long tail terms for dust mites. But first things first.
Scanning SitePoint for successful sites from makes so much sense to me. Why put in all the research when you can “look under the hood” of already successful sites to see examples of successful niches and then apply yourself and steal some of their thunder.
The first thing you are going to need to do is create an account with google. At the top right corner of your account you will see you publisher id number. Simply copy and paste the publisher id over to all 7 ad units.
There are 7 adsense ad units planned throughout the code on prosense they are as follows
1) Adsense singlepost bottom banner
2) Adsense homepage linkunit
3) Adsense homepage banner
4) Adsense sidebar
5) Adsense singlepost top square
6) Adsense singlepost top banner
7) Adsense singlepost bottom square
That’s it, now get to work publishing content. The next post in this series is going to show you how to add google analytics onto your new site so you can see where you traffic is coming from.

I learned this tip from Bryan actually: be careful with adsense. You don’t want to slap it everywhere right away because of “value clicks”. Basically, this means that sites which have a low CTR will run into problems with their clicks being worth next to nothing… and that’s no way to make money.
Overall, Adsense is a great way to make some money online, but be wary of where you use it. You might not want to slap it everywhere…. at least not right away!

The worst part about being value priced by Adsense is that you can have one site that performs wonderfully using Adsense, and another one that does terribly… they’ll both get value priced. It rests on your overall CTR, so if your CTR is getting pretty low (less than 1-2%)… remove your Adsense code before it effects your other sites.

Its ashame that one site effects another so much. Google tries to nickel and dime the publisher. They will not give a break to the advertiser.

Do you guys know anyone who really made money through Google’s AdSense? Sure, we all know that Google makes a chunk of money out of that, but do you really know anyone that regularly gets a check in the mail from Google for his/her contribution to AdSense?

Personally I always try to place the adsense code either to the right of or directly under pictures/graphics. I find I get a much better CTR. Hope this helps!

Patrick, Yea. I used to make thousands from it. Affiliate marketing is more profitable however so I switched.

Adsense is one of those things that you can either make money from or waste a lot of your time with… however, your risk of wasting time and money decreases if you know how to go about using it…
