Becoming a Successful Freelance Writer

If you have some writing talent, then you may want to consider joining the freelance writing bandwagon because the demand for the written word is huge in any online business. Every e-commerce company needs to have relevant and informative content on their website. Articles are also used for marketing promotion in article directories and for search engine optimization purposes.

But if you want to become a freelance writer, you need to face all the challenges that come with it. Freelancing is not easy because aside from the constant struggle to find decent paying work, you need to develop your writing ability that will set you apart from the others. It is also important to have enough money on your bank account for the quarterly taxes you need to pay.

And we haven’t even gone into the emotional and mental struggles of being a freelance writer. A lot of freelancers don’t take this issue into consideration when they get into this business but if you want to succeed in this business, you need to consider several emotional and mental factors before plunging into freelance writing. Here are some of the problems as well as some tips you can use if you do decide to become a freelance writer.

1) Expect Rejection – you will definitely receive a lot of rejections as a writer whether you are applying for a freelance position or a permanent position. You need to grow a thick skin because rejection is a sure fact in this business. Remember not to take it personally and just keep applying until you get the job that is really suited for you.

2) Realize that you may need to bend over backwards – there are clients who don’t know how to treat other people civilly. Also, there may be times when you will need to do a crazy amount of writing and revisions just to satisfy one particular client.

3) Loneliness – freelance writing is certainly a very lonely business even for a hard-core introvert. You will have no one to talk to for the whole day unless someone is with you at home. There are ways to combat this such as joining writer’s forums and even going out once in a while. But you certainly need to be prepared to handle loneliness because you will inevitably experience this.

4) Ask for a raise – if you feel that you are really good enough, don’t be afraid to ask for a raise because otherwise, you will be stuck on your current rate. And you should realize that if you are really a good writer, there are always other clients who are willing to hire your services if your current client refused your request.

5) Politeness and civility – some writers forget the basics of politeness and civility. You should say thanks for the work you get and be as civil as possible to your employer. Basic politeness and civility can go a long way in this business.

I was a stringer for the local community newspaper and eventually for a local daily newspaper when I was in High School and college. A stringer is a part time or freelance correspondent for the news media. Writing for the local weekly newspaper is a good way to get articles published and build a portfolio. These days many weekly newspapers also has a presence on web. The more you write the better you get. Most local community papers welcome freelance writers but don’t expect to get rich doing this.

Emotional and mental anguish is right! I tried writing for our SEO Dept along with doing my normal reception tasks. I have always prided myself as a decent writer and thought I could do it. Well, I could, but definitely didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into as far as work load. You really have to LOVE it and manage your time well otherwise work can pile up and the writing is no fun. At that point, what is the point?

Good points ma’m. Will certainly help starters like me. I was already feeling a bit nervous that ppl don’t want to read what I write.

There is one more advice you should give to freelance writers (and to any other self-employed person), you have to learn how to budget your time correctly! No one tells you what to do, so you have to determine what you should complete yourself. This can be accomplished by using notepads to write down goals and “Things to do” and follow up on them.

Its quite a saturated market. I think the only way to make it is to develop great writing skills.

I think it would be very difficult making a living being a freelance writer. It would be fun though!
