What Is StumbleUpon?

    What Is StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a web browser plugin that allows its users to discover and rate webpages, photos, video, news articles, and blogs. If you don’t have the plugin, go to http://stumbleupon.com and download it. It’s fantastic for long nights of boredom!

These pages are all entered into the Stumble database the same way. A user finds it, and clicks the thumbs up icon (meaning they like the website) . You also have the option to click thumbs down (meaning it wasn’t for you). StumbleUpon keeps track of your responses to these websites and begins to filter your results for websites that it thinks you would enjoy. It really is brilliant!

There is also the social networking aspect of StumbleUpon. It allows you to build a homepage similar to a Myspace page. You can add friends, blog, and even check out other peoples favorite sites. It really is a great way to find some of the hidden “gems” of the internet.

Stumble Upon also recently added video. Similar to You Tube, you can view videos, comment, and rate them. However, just like the StumbleUpon system for webpages, your ratings count. It uses the ratings to filter out sites that you may not like, and to send you to ones that you will like.

How Does Stumble Upon Help My Blog?

Stumble Upon helps your blog or site by giving you millions of prospective viewers. Much like myspace, facebook, etc; the social networking side of Stumble gives you the potential to market your page to millions.

This goes into much more detail, but I will save the rest of this for Terence Chang’s guest post “Massive Amounts Of Traffic With StumbleUpon”. I’ll post this in a a couple of days for you.

I have update the stumbleUpOn related post on my site after I received an email from one of the members. He ask me not to miss-lead members to think StumbleUpOn as spyware…

What do you think about that?

StumbleUpon is a GREAT way to drive more traffic to your site! I would recommend including a link at the bottom of every post that makes it easy for people to “Stumble” your page (give it a thumbs up). The more people that give you a thumbs up, the more traffic you will get, and the easier you make it for people to give you a “thumbs up,” the better off you are!

As for using StumbleUpon for discovering your own sites … the best advice I can give is to simply use it every day! The more sites you “Stumble,” the faster it learns what kinds of sites you like and don’t like!

Okay, I’m going to show my ignornce here, but am I missing something.

I’m well aware of what stumble upon is. In fact I used it a while back and had a page which I was able to get about 100 users or so to stumble.

When I looked carefully at my traffic logs, that 100+ stumbles equated to a total of about 5 unique visitors driven from Stumble Upon that I could identify.

That’s not much of a traffic pay off and I very quickly stopped using it.
