Why Every Niche Blog Needs “Open Blog Friday”

Own a niche. Serve a specific market segment. Sure. But after owning all things “Miniature Horses” forwards and backwards for a year, your Technorati authority is 25 and your ranking is 50,000.

Serving a niche has its ups and downs. On one hand, by serving your audience with lots of relevant information about the niche, all in one place, you get subscribers, you get favorited and repeat visitors. But you find that nobody wants to link to your “10 Christmas gifts you can make out of old miniature horse shoes”. You’re a big fish in a very small pond.

Would you like to appeal to a broader audience in order to build your authority, ranking and traffic, while serving your niche audience? Solution: “Open Blog Friday”.

Open Blog Friday. Any topic is fair game. “How to Hide Your Diary Where Your Mom Will Never Look”?… “My Super Secret Recipe For Homemade Rootbeer”?… With Open Blog Friday, your regular readership comes to expect an “off topic” post, that interests you (and hopefully thousands more), but may not fit in with the theme of the overall blog. It doesn’t seem so random at all when it’s scheduled randomness. And you get permission to break out of your niche at least once every 7 days.

Consider making “Open Blog Friday” (or Monday, Tuesday etc.) a part of your blogging plans. Serve your niche, but take Fridays back for yourself.

I think that is a good idea to have it actually scheduled. You can tell that some people just randomly do something off topic because they have nothing to post about, and its cool. A nice surprise.

This is a very good idea, I do something similar by posting a jokey video I’ve found every Sunday. It’s a good excuse to post something different and refreshing for the readers as well as giving me a break from coming up with regular niche content. It can definitely boost hit counts too. I’m in the middle of a big Stumbleupon rush due to a video I posted.

Very interesting tip! This can really help keep the regular readers come back for more. New readers will also be enticed to come and read as often as they can especially since you offer something different at least once every week.

Good job on this post. Great read!

    Hey Austin,

Interesting concept. I never thought of doing this myself. I might give it a try to see how my readers like it.

    Thanks
    Greg
