How To Be A Technorati Superstar (Part 1)

What is Technorati?

Technorati is a search engine for blogs. Think Google without quite as much spam. Technorati measures your sites value based on incoming links. Technorati LogoThis is the only factor they consider when ranking sites. Although it isn’t perfect, a lot of blogging revolves around Technorati. Whenever you sign up for sites like Review Me and Pay Per Post, Technorati always plays a part in how much you will earn.

How Do I Find My Technorati Rank?

It’s pretty simple. Just log in to your Technorati account and it should tell you from your profile page. If you want to search another blogs Technorati ranking, you can always use the handy-dandy search feature provided at the top of the page. Just type in the URL and hit enter. Technorati will do the rest.

What Do My Technorati Stats Mean?

After you log in, or search for the blog you are looking for, you will see a page that looks like this. This page shows your “blog reactions” (incoming links from blogs with a Technorati account), and all of your stats next to the image of your blog.

The stats are pretty simple to understand. The “authority” number is how many incoming links you have from blogs with a Technorati account. This is different from “blog reactions” because your authority isn’t based on how many times they link to you. A blog can link to you 200 times and you’ll only get 1 point for “authority”. This keeps people from creating bogus blogs and linking to you multiple times to build your Technorati ranking.Technorati Stats

The next number is your “rank”. This is how you rank compared to all of the other bloggers with a Technorati account. Remember, Technorati bases their ranking solely on incoming links. So this isn’t saying that another blog is better than yours… they just have more sites linking to them.

You may also notice a pink box with a heart in it. This is your “favorites” number. Favorites are people that actually added you to their favorite blogs list. This is done by clicking the tab that says “favorite it”. Pretty simple huh?

The Technorati Top 100

technorati top 100This is where we are all striving to be. The top 100 is a pretty tough number to crack but once you do, you are definitely amongst the elite bloggers. You can get to the Technorati top 100 by clicking on the “popular” tab in the top left corner (just under the logo). On the next page you’ll just need to find the link that says top 100. I’ve provided a picture to show you where it is. As you can see, Technorati shows the top five ranked blogs on the right-hand side of the page. If you look directly under these blogs you will see the link to check out the top 100 on the list. I recommend checking out your comptetition. Engadget is currently ranked number one, followed by Gizmodo, and so on. My goal is to make the top 100 someday, and I’m sure with enough hard work, and a bit of luck here and there… I can do it. Technorati, let me in!

In the past few weeks I’ve noticed some of my posts are getting their own ranking in Technorati. Have you seen this happen before? For example, one of my posts has an authority of 13, which seems bad, since that 13 would be better if it was just added to the authority of my Technorati rating.

Strange. Haven’t heard of this before. I’ll see what I can find out!

Yeah, I’ve seen that happen to some other bloggers as well…

That usually happens with pages instead of posts, I think. I’ve seen a few pages of popular blogs listed with authority 0.

If I’m not intending on using PayPerPost or similar, what benefits does Technorati offer, other than just bragging rights? People sometimes email me about my ranking / authority but I don’t see any traffic from it so it’s really directly useful other than as a measurement. Any other thoughts on that?

Nice, I recently changed my blog to a new domain and design. I will try to improve my technorati more for this one. Before I didn’t really bother.

Caroline - It’s really a measuring stick for your blogs success. It’s one of many factors considered when selling advertising, or even selling your blog for that matter.
