10 Traits Of Successful Bloggers

Want to get rich blogging? I made this list so that we can evaluate ourselves to determine which things on this list we already have, and which ones we need to work on. Every successful blogger has these traits. Do you?

  1. Writing - Although most probloggers aren’t extremely skilled writers, they have the tools to get the job done. You’ll notice a few spelling and grammatical errors from time to time, but they normally are on top of their game. They have an uncanny ability to get a point across.
  2. Networking - To be a successful blogger you have to be able to network. You have to start early on and build relationships with other bloggers, make friends in the community, and promote your blog to new readers. All of these are achieved through networking.
  3. Outside the box thinking - Nobody that’s EXTREMELY successful online got there by using the same tired ideas. The idea might be the same at heart, but they find a way to improve it and or alter it completely. The same thing doesn’t work for everybody but they have the intelligence to make it work for them.
  4. Time management - Working from home, the library, your local coffee shop or even from the beach takes the ability to manage your time. The internet is full of distractions and if you let it, it will suck you in and waste hours of your precious time. Successful people have the ability to shut everything else out and focus on the task at hand.
  5. Ability to engage an audience - If they didn’t have an audience to write to, how successful could they be? You’ll never be the next internet superstar until you are fully capable of getting and keeping an audience captive. They have to trust what you write and always be waiting for the next post.
  6. Positive attitude - If you believe you can make it you will. You might have a lot of work to do, but it can be done. Nobody has ever been highly successful while thinking “I can’t do it”.
  7. Persistence - Another trait of a successful blogger is the ability to keep going through tough times. You are bound to run into a roadblock here or there. Being able to overcome them is what will set you apart.
  8. Ambition - You constantly have to strive to improve. You think I want to make as much money as Darren Rowse and John Chow? Not a chance… I want to make more!
  9. Entrepreneurial spirit - Not a single problogger has ever gotten rich by having a desire to work for someone else. This is what drives most of us to the internet, blogging, and being an entrepreneur in general… the need to carve our own path.
  10. Goals - We all have goals, but what sets apart the successful from the unsuccessful is this… the ability to achieve them. We’ll work tirelessly to get what we want, and won’t feel content until we’ve reached our goals.

How many of these traits do you have?

It’s just to bad that you dont have any of these qualities.

You’ll never make it. Give up while you still have some credibility (not much but some).

    Hey Bryan,

Nicely summarized. Those are indeed common qualities among successful blogger :)

In fact they are successful qualities among successful people in all trades.

    Stay Positive

Great list! I hope I have some of the qualities, but I find I suck at #4. There just never seems to be enough time to get everything done on time.

I agree with James, these are qualities of successful people no matter what the trade. Only writing is a bit more blogger specific.

    Random Hater - :)

James - I agree… minus the writing, you need all of these traits to be successful in day to day life.

Sutocu - Time management isn’t something you are born with. It’s something that is learned. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Jill Koenig lately who is an expert at time management. Some of it has rubbed off on me… I suggest you drop by her website and send her an email. Maybe she’ll have some tips for you! http://goalguru.com

Time management is a tricky one if you’re working FT and trying to start a new blog.

  15. By GoalGuru.com on Aug 22, 2007 | Reply

I love # 10, obviously Goals are a constant in any endeavor (and my life’s passion). =)

For blogging especially #7 Persistence… how many times have you gone to a blog and found it had been abandoned by it’s founder 6 months ago!?

Bryan, I have come to count on you. I know I can come here every day and find great stuff, from you and your community of aspiring bloggers.

I believe the discipline it takes to create a blog is one of the main traits shared by anyone at the top of their game in any field.

    Live Your Dreams,

    -Jill :)

Persistence is probably the most important. Just keep on trucking and hope for the best.

I especially like number 8, good post Bryan.

  21. By Nicole on Aug 22, 2007 | Reply

Great post Bryan. I’d like to think I have all of them, but then who knows. I’m not trying to be a full-time problogger though ;) That job is safe with you. I’m trying to be an author, but you need the same skills for that. Thanks for a great post!

    Great post, Bryan.
I think that out of this list, being able to captivate the audience on a daily basis is definitely the most difficult. If you have a knack for doing this, then it will make people more interested in you, and totally boost those blog readers.

    Keep those tips coming!

  23. By someGirl on Aug 23, 2007 | Reply

    I have maybe….. 1 of those. :)

Number 7 gets to me everytime… I’m still learning to get pass #7 in most things that I do nowadays.

I like that piece about ambition and how you are gonna make more than John Chow. That sounds like something I would say too! Good list, and I see you have many, many people who are in your corner.

You’re like Little Mac from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! Started out small, but striving for the big time. A true hustler. :)

I think that having an email list should go on there- even though it doesnt go with the theme, it’s so important to get traffic outside of google!

Time management is a big one for me. Sometimes when I need to be writing, networking, or anything else that would be considered productive, I just sit and read other blogs. I really have to stay on top of myself to keep focused and get stuff done. I’m getting better though.

  29. By Gerri on Oct 19, 2007 | Reply

Those are really good points. I find it hard to find time to do anything with work and a four month old baby girl I love spending time with - I guess that’s where time management comes in. I do have to get more organised and get a bit more order in my life. Your points look like they will apply to other things in life besides blogging. Thanks and keep it coming.

Thats a very insightful list. I find when times are tough, its good to have a positive attitude and a focused perspective. I believe in the natural balance of things (yin and yang) and when the going gets rough, green pastures are not far behind …although the same is true when things are going well, one should definitely be more on guard (similar to that of day turning into night and night turning into day and so on and so forth)
